Giving An Authentic Period Feel To Your Western Novel

One of the most important things that any writer can do to add an authentic period feel to their western novel is to research the setting and historical events that the novel will take place around. As far as the setting goes, if the novel is supposed to take place in the southwest then read up on the vegetation and natural phenomenon of the area–cacti, coyotes, red rock landscapes. The same goes with the prairies and plains–types of grasses, buffalo, seasonal changes and weather.Check out this link here. The names of plants and vivid descriptions of the land make the reader feel like a local. Including references to what is going on at the time of your novel is also a nice genuine touch. You could mention politicians, the president at the time, the gold rush, wars, railroads, and basically anything that would be relevant to really put the characters and story in place.

All western novels should credit the weapons that won the west. Whether it be outlaws or sheriffs, they are all iconic gun slingers. Describe the period dress of the time–the fabrics, hides, and style of western clothing. Knowing the details can really help paint the big picture for your readers.
